Nalanda was a city in northeast India which was destroyed in the twelfth century. Before its destruction it was home to India’s largest Buddhist monastic university. The university was established in the fifth century. In the eighth and ninth centuries, several thousand monks from India, Tibet, China, and Korea studied here. In 2010 the University of Nalanda was re-established and in 2014 teaching resumed with a small body of students.
