Thangka

Symbols and art

A thangka (Tib. ‘scroll’) is a Tibetan painting in which mineral paints are applied to a primed surface, usually made of cotton. Pictures featuring Buddhist motifs such as bodhisattvas, wrathful deities, or mandalas are used in meditation, among other things. When a thangka is not being used it is rolled up and stored away.
