The various versions of the Buddhistwere developed in consecutive steps. According to tradition, the first council after the death of the was held in Rajagriha where, under the guidance of , the basket of discourses ( ) was compiled. The next council followed 110 years later in Vaishali where the basket of monastic rules ( ) was laid down. Further Buddhist councils followed. The last one was held in 1954 in Rangoon where a binding version of the canon was adopted.
