Pure lands

Doctrines and rituals

Mahayana Buddhism gave rise to the idea of different paradisiacal worlds, each ruled by a different Buddha. In these buddha worlds, or pure lands, there are no negative realms of existence. The beings that inhabit them can attend to the teachings, undisturbed by painful experiences or worldly cares. Practising Buddhists have access to the pure lands through meditation. They also hope to be reborn (rebirth) there.
