Shakyamuni

Heavenly beings and deities

The name Shakyamuni is an honorific title of Prince Siddhartha Gautama; in Sanskrit it means ‘Sage of the Shakya [people]’. Buddha Shakyamuni is therefore a reference to the historical Buddha, for whom there are various other designations such as Bhagavan (Skt. ‘Noble One’) or Tathagata.
