Hinayana

Religious schools and traditions

The Sanskrit word hinayana means ‘lesser vehicle’; it is a pejorative term used in Mahayana texts to refer to early schools of Buddhism. It implies that their adherents had not fully grasped the true nature of things. The word is little used nowadays; terms such as ‘Nikaya Buddhism’ or ‘mainstream Buddhism’ are used instead.
