Three Baskets

Religious texts

The term Three Baskets (Skt. tripitaka, Pa. tipitaka; from Sanskrit tri, ‘three’, and pitaka, ‘basket’) describes the collection of Buddhist teachings. The Three Baskets contain the monastic rules (Skt./Pa. Vinayapitaka), the discourses (Skt. Sutrapitaka, Pa. Suttapitaka), and the philosophical treatises, conceptual analyses, and comments (Skt. Abhidharmapitaka, Pa. Abhidhammapitaka). Today, the Pali version of the Three Baskets is the most widely disseminated in Sri Lanka and across Southeast Asia; it is also the oldest completely preserved Buddhist canon still in use.
