Chaitya

Symbols and art

In Sanskrit, chaitya means ‘heaped up’ and originally probably referred to the burial mounds of important people. Later the term was used for the prayer and procession halls in Buddhist monasteries. The chaityas of Buddhist cave temples usually contain a stupa or a statue of the Buddha which worshippers ritually circumambulate.
