Devadatta

Legendary and historical figures

Devadatta (Skt. ‘god-given’) is the name of Siddhartha Gautama’s jealous cousin. He tried to kill the Buddha in an attempt to become the leader of the Buddhist community. After several failed attempts, he founded his own monastic order. It is said that he died when his followers left him to join the Buddha’s community.
