Indology refers to the research and study of the languages and cultures of the Indian subcontinent, from the beginnings to the present day. Initially, scholars above all researched and translated texts in Indian languages such as Sanskrit and Pali. Later the study of linguistic and literary sources was complemented by research on Indian history and society. One of the first eminent indologists in the German-speaking world was the cultural philosopher and poet Friedrich Schlegel (1772–1829). Today, the University of Zurich offers a degree programme in Indology.
