Ananda

Legendary and historical figures

Ananda (Skt. ‘bliss’) was the Buddha’s cousin and one of his chief disciples. After joining the order early on, he became the Buddha’s personal assistant. Ananda’s excellent memory made him an authority at the first Buddhist council, during which the discourses of the Buddha were codified.
