Arhat

Legendary and historical figures

An arhat (Skt. ‘Worthy One’, Chin. luohan) is one who has achieved the highest stage on the path to salvation. He has abandoned craving, hate and delusion, and thus upon his death will not experience rebirth. The arhat was the religious ideal of early Buddhism, in contrast to the bodhisattva, the religious ideal of Mahayana Buddhism.
