Religious texts

Pali is an old language with roots probably in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent. It is a member of the Indo-European language family. Pali is the sacred vernacular of Theravada Buddhism (Pali canon) but is no longer in use beyond the liturgical context. Although Pali is considered the ‘language of the Buddha’, it remains contested whether it was ever spoken as a living language.
