Legendary and real places

Borobodur is a sacred Buddhist site on the Indonesian island of Java. The temple complex was built in the eighth century and may have originally been a pilgrimage site. The structure consists of nine levels, one above the other in steps, and represents the Buddhist universe. The walls of the lower galleries feature large reliefs that depict episodes from the life of Buddha Shakyamuni (Buddha legends). The upper galleries contain rows of stupas and Buddha figures.
