Councils

Religious texts

The various versions of the Buddhist canon were developed in consecutive steps. According to tradition, the first council after the death of the Buddha was held in Rajagriha where, under the guidance of Ananda, the basket of discourses (Sutrapitaka) was compiled. The next council followed 110 years later in Vaishali where the basket of monastic rules (Vinayapitaka) was laid down. Further Buddhist councils followed. The last one was held in 1954 in Rangoon where a binding version of the canon was adopted.
