Sanskrit

Religious texts

Sanskrit is an old Indian language of the Indo-European language family. In ancient India it was regarded as the language of scholars and culture: myths, laws, poetry, plays and scientific treatises were written in Sanskrit. It is the sacred language of Hinduism and also used in a number of Buddhist and later Jain texts (Jainism). Beyond the realm of liturgy, Sanskrit is hardly spoken today.
