Bust of a Luohan

Bust of a Luohan

Luohans (arhats in Sanskrit) are the religious ideal of early monastic Buddhism. Considered to be direct disciples of the Buddha Shakyamuni, they are said to have achieved awakening through their own efforts. They are portrayed as monks, often with distorted features that symbolize their exceptional powers, which they use to preserve and protect the Buddhist teachings until the arrival of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future.
