On the left of this heavily undercut relief, Buddha Shakyamuni is seated in deep meditation. At the other end of the scene is Mara, the god of death, in deep despair. He had tried in vain to prevent the Buddha from awakening. He had even sent his three beautiful daughters to seduce him with their physical charms, as can be seen in the image, but with no success. They could not wrench him from his deep contemplation, nor could the three terrifying demons pushing into the scene at the top right.
