Mahasiddhas – great adepts – are the 84 legendary Indian masters credited with supernatural abilities. One of them is Virupa, portrayed here as a portly, goggle-eyed yogi. He is naked except for a short loincloth and a garland. He has wound a strap around his left knee to stop him from falling asleep during lengthy periods of meditation. His left hand is raised to cast a spell. He is said to have once stopped the sun in its course with the same gesture.
