Portrait of the Zen Priest Gemmon Doyu

Portrait of the Zen Priest Gemmon Doyu

In Zen Buddhist schools, the personal relationship between master and pupil plays a central role. In many cases the masters are able to guide their pupils on to the right path without words, on the strength of their personality and empathy alone.

Portraits like this are meant to call to mind the masters and evoke their presence, even when they are absent or have died. The images often bear an inscription with a personal dedication by the respective master.
