The Arhats Vanavasin, Angaja, Kalika, and Ajita From a series of 7 thangkas with Buddha Shakyamuni and the 18 arhats

This scroll, part of a series, shows the Buddha's legendary pupils in a picturesque and highly detailed mountain landscape.

Mythical snow lions can be seen on the snow-covered mountain peaks, and yogis and monks perform ritual exercises in the caves at the bottom.

The four arhats are clearly identifiable by their symbols. Kalika, in the lower left, is holding two golden earrings. The story goes that he made them out of the jewellery which the gods in heaven gave him for his impressive teaching. Although he lived in stark poverty, he wore the earrings as a reminder that his instruction had opened the gods’ ears.
