Standing Buddha Amida

Standing Buddha Amida

Buddha Amitabha (Jap. Amida) is the personification of compassion and wisdom combined. This wooden figure stands upon a flowering lotus; the gestures made by the hands indicate that Amitabha will help his followers on their path and will fulfil their wishes.

Typical characteristics of Amida sculptures from 18th-century Japan include the strong body with broad shoulders and a slightly protruding stomach, and the playful, rather stylized arrangement of the folds in the robe.
