The Great Stupa at Sanchi is among the most significant Buddhist buildings in India because, despite its great age, it is extremely well preserved.
Its initial construction phase dates back to the third century BCE, thus making the structure over 2 200 years old. Its gateways with their splendid relief carvings are world famous and are a “must see” for all visitors to India. The Swiss artist Alice Boner visited Sanchi several times during her many trips across India; this photograph was taken by her.
