The Four Pleasures of Nan Shenglu (detail)

The Four Pleasures of Nan Shenglu (detail)

In this picture scroll, the prominent figure painter Chen Hongshou portrays Bai Juyi (722–846), the famous poet of the Tang dynasty (618–907). He is shown engrossed in his favourite pastimes, one of which is meditation.

When Buddhism arrived in China, the country’s intellectual elite began to explore its complex philosophical ideas. They even incorporated its various meditation practices into their own system of intellectual pursuits.
