Buddha Maitreya

Buddha Maitreya

This bronze figure from Kashmir depicts Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. He is seated with both feet flat on the ground, a pose that is characteristic for him but otherwise unusual in Buddhist art. Wearing the attire of an Awakened One, he sits upon a throne that is supported by lions and enveloped by a radiant double nimbus. His gesture indicates that it will fall to him to set the Wheel of the Law in motion again.
