Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion

Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion

This large wooden sculpture of the Bodhisattva Guanyin is captivating in its delicacy and elegance. His slim body with its narrow shoulders is enveloped in a flowing robe; his hair is tied up into a tall topknot.

Originally, this Guanyin probably had a metal crown and earrings, now lost – as is the vase he once held in his hands. Traces of gold suggest that the statue was entirely gilded.
