Machig Labdrön (ca 1055–1149) was an important female tantric Buddhist master who established a monastery in southern Tibet. Here she is portrayed as a yogini dancing ecstatically. She is completely naked except for a five-lobed crown and jewellery made of bone beads. In her right hand she holds up a skull drum; with her left, she rings a bell. Its sound symbolizes the emptiness that permeates all things.
