This relief follows a standardized iconographic programme. The Buddha sits enthroned within a niche framed by two pillars; a magic face is visible above its arch. The Buddha wears a close-fitting, unpleated robe; only its hems are visible. He is shown instructing his disciples, his hands displaying the gesture of setting in motion the Wheel of the Law. The wheel is shown in his right hand, and again beneath his lotus throne, where it is flanked by two gazelles from the park at Sarnath. These, too, are symbols of Buddhism.
