Jizo Bosatsu, Bodhisattva in the Guise of a Monk

Jizo Bosatsu, Bodhisattva in the Guise of a Monk

The Bodhisattva Jizo (Kshitigarbha in Sanskrit) is extremely popular in Japan. Among his attributes are a stick rattle, a hallmark of monks, and a jewel that has the power to fulfil all wishes. He dresses like a monk but is often richly adorned with necklaces. Here he is seated on a high lotus plinth. Jizo comes to the aid of beings reborn in hell and helps them to attain rebirth in a better place as quickly as possible. In Japan, he is also venerated as the protector of the sick and weak, of children, and of pregnant women and pilgrims.
