Buddha Shakyamuni

Buddha Shakyamuni

This Buddha sits with his legs crossed in what is known as the lotus position. His right hand rests upon his knee, his fingers pointing downwards; his left hand rests in his lap in the gesture of meditation. These gestures allude to the profound meditative state that eventually led the Buddha to supreme knowledge.

The elongated earlobes, the three creases around his neck, the curl of hair on his forehead, the protuberance on the crown of his head, and the snail-shell hairstyle are typical features in artistic representations of the Buddha.
