Shaka Nyorai, the Historical Buddha

Shaka Nyorai, the Historical Buddha

The comparatively small size of this figure of Buddha Shakyamuni suggests that it used to be kept in a box-shaped shrine on a home altar.

The strong physical presence, the natural drape of the robe, and the realistic clothing details are typical features of Japanese sculpture in the late 13th century and lend this Buddha a naturalistic appearance.
