Padmasambhava with his 25 Tibetan Pupils From a series of 7 thangkas

This scroll shows the great Tibetan tantric master Padmasambhava. He is said to have travelled to Tibet in the 8th century in order to establish Buddhism there. Legend has it that he first conquered the demons and deities of the reigning Bon faith and forced them to serve as protectors of Buddhism from then on. Here he is displayed as a high-ranking teacher and founder of the Nyingma School. The figure is depicted in a lively fashion and with much attention to detail. Padmasambhava is embedded in a landscape of mountains and flowers and surrounded by several deities.
