This three-quarter portrait is in keeping with standard images of Zen Buddhist priests. The master is seated in the meditation position with his legs crossed on an ornamentally carved, seat, his shoes are on a small footstool. Over his simple garment he wears a precious gold brocade wrap. In one hand he holds a stick which he uses to smack his pupils seated in meditation on the back to stop them from falling asleep. His gaze avoids the viewer and is fixed on a point hidden to us.
