Buddha Vairocana

Buddha Vairocana

This Tibetan figure is of the Buddha Vairocana, regarded as the personification of all aspects of wisdom. Vairocana is portrayed displaying the Wheel of the Law (dharmachakra) gesture: his hands held in front of his chest symbolize the setting in motion of the Wheel of the Law, meaning the dissemination of the Buddhist teachings (the dharma).

This figure is an example of exquisite artistic form. In keeping with its cultic significance, it is richly decorated and set with gems. Particularly fine in its execution and inset with stones, the crown is reminiscent of jewellery associated with an Indian prince.
