Head of a Monk

Head of a Monk

With its broad grin and mischievous expression, this head is a picture of great mirth and contentment.

As the figure’s body is lost, it is uncertain who is depicted here. The round face with its chubby cheeks and double chin suggests it might be the monk called Budai. Known frequently as “the Fat  Buddha”, Budai is often depicted as a laughing monk with a pot belly.
