The classical representation of the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism, Bodhidharma, is the half-length portrait in three-quarter view. The Indian monk is shown with foreign-looking features, a full beard, and earrings. The stern, almost sullen expression and the keen eyes illustrate his determination to attain awakening through intensive meditation.
What is also typical is the painting method: his garment and body are rendered in a few expressive strokes, while his face is depicted in minute detail with the aid of a very fine brush.
