Mahayana Buddhism conceived the idea of a timeless and eternal Buddha principle that personifies the Absolute, the All-encompassing, and thus ultimate wisdom.
In some schools of Tibetan Buddhism, this primordial Buddha is known as Vajradhara, the “Diamond Holder”. In hands crossed over his chest, Vajradhara holds his attributes – a vajra (diamond sceptre) and a bell – in a gesture symbolizing the union of compassion and wisdom. It refers to the elimination of all opposites and thus to the Absolute.
