Monastic Rules for Monks

Monastic Rules for Monks

Texts of this kind contain the monastic rules from the Pali canon of the Theravada tradition of Buddhism. These precious manuscripts were produced for novices living in a monastery and who would later take their vows as monks. The individual leaves are fine sheets of ivory that have been gilded and decorated with floral motifs. They once belonged to Johannes Itten, the first director of the Museum Rietberg.
