Standing Monk with Hands Folded

Standing Monk with Hands Folded

Standing erect, this monk holds his hands folded in front of his chest in the “anjali” gesture, which expresses respectful salutation and ritual worship. Both feet are missing. The robe flutters around his legs and is so fine that his nipples are visible. His head is covered in tight curls. His earlobes are elongated as often seen in buddha figures, where they signify the rejection of worldly possessions. Perhaps the intention here is similar, as monks, too, renounce material goods such as jewellery.
