Buddha Shakyamuni

Buddha Shakyamuni

Buddha Shakyamuni is seated with his legs crossed in the lotus position. His hands are raised in the gesture of teaching. His monk's robe has a decorative floral pattern and leaves his right shoulder uncovered.

This figure was made using the dry lacquer technique: layers of lacquer-soaked cloth were placed over a rough clay model; once the lacquer hardened, the clay core was removed. The method produced lightweight but durable statues.
