Yakshi, Nymph with Lotus Flowers, fragment of a baluster

Yakshi, Nymph with Lotus Flowers, fragment of a baluster

This tree nymph, called a yakshi, is portrayed dancing. In her left hand, above her head, she holds a water vessel containing lotus flowers; in her right hand, she holds a lotus in full bloom. She is naked except for items of jewellery such as armbands and drop earrings. Her hair is braided, and only the odd strand falls across her full breasts.

This relief once formed part of a stupa, and was probably set within its gateway or perimeter wall.
