Plaque Showing the Buddha Teaching

Plaque Showing the Buddha Teaching

This plaque made of fired clay shows the Buddha teaching. He is seated on a throne, and architectural elements are visible in the background. With his hands he is performing the Wheel of the Law gesture, signifying the dissemination of the Buddhist teachings across the world. Like a wheel which, once set in motion, keeps on turning, this spread is meant to continue indefinitely.

Plaques like this one were produced in large quantities and served as mementos, votive objects, and lucky charms throughout Asia.
