The Buddha Invokes the Earth Goddess as his Witness

The Buddha Invokes the Earth Goddess as his Witness

In a niche flanked by columns, the richly adorned and crowned Buddha is seated in the lotus position. At the moment of his awakening he invokes the earth goddess for support. She is the small figure just below the lotus throne. Above the niche, the Buddha is depicted a second time. His left hand is performing the gesture of fearlessness, while his right hand is clutching the hem of his monk’s robe.
